  • Description / Narcissus Award Winning Deer Resistant Blend Daffodil Bulbs

The Narcissus Award Winning Deer Resistant Blend contains 5 varieties that have each won the Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit and offer an extended season of blooms—from early spring through late spring—starting with Little Gem in early spring, followed by Jet Fire, Minnow, Kokopelli, and Segovia in mid-spring, and finishing with Sun Disc in late spring. These varieties are somewhat diminutive in size, but they have a huge impact in the garden with their award-winning blooms and sweet fragrances, which also attract plenty of pollinators, including butterflies and hummingbirds, and create bountiful bunch bouquets.

These Narcissus varieties, commonly called daffodils, have an upright, clumping habit and grow to between 5 inches and 12 inches tall. They multiply and naturalize easily, with sprawling clumps of long, flat, strap-like leaves and showy blooms appearing year after year, in ideal conditions with adequate space, sunlight, water, and fertilizer. Best planted in groups or masses, daffodils are versatile plants that work equally well in mixed beds, front of borders, and patio pots. Consider planting large sweeping drifts in open areas, in masses under deciduous trees, and in smaller groupings in front of shrubs. They mix well with ground covers and other spring-blooming bulbs in the garden but can also be forced for indoor blooms in winter.

Cold hardy (to Zone 3) and extremely easy to grow and maintain, this deer resistant blend of award-winning daffodils is virtually foolproof. Daffodils prefer areas with cool winters and warm, dry summers, but they grow well in most USDA Hardiness Zones if there is a discernable winter. They grow best in sunny to partly shady locations with rich, fertile, well-draining soil having a neutral to acidic pH. Water daffodils during the growth period, but keep in mind, bulbs do not like wet feet. When planting, be sure to allow adequate space between bulbs and plant them at the proper depth—4 inches apart and 4 inches deep. For robust flowering during the current season as well as the following spring season, feed bulbs with a well-balanced fertilizer, such as Espoma Organic® Bulb-tone® Bulb and Flower Food, as soon as growth begins in spring. After flowers bloom, allow foliage to die back naturally and cut back once fully faded. Daffodils are relatively pest-free and deer deer resistant.
