Oh, Tiny Tuff Stuff™ lives up to its name, all right, with lovely lacecap blooms that repeat near season's end no matter what the weather has chosen to do! This super-compact Mountain Hydrangea is prepared to wow you from border or container with handsome deciduous foliage and two flushes of magnificent blooms every year!

The flowers are irresistible, their unusual lacecap form making them look delicate (ha!) but their vigor keeping them fresh and lovely for many weeks. Superb for fresh and dried arrangements, they stand upright on sturdy stems held above the foliage. They will be blue in acidic soil, pink in alkaline, or possibly even white! But regardless of how they begin, as the blooms age they all turn a uniform, pleasing shade of deep pink.

The first, and larger flush of blooms occurs in early summer in most climates, arising on old wood (which means that if you want to prune this shrub, do so right after the final blooms pass in early fall, never in late winter or early spring). In mid- or late summer, there will be another season of flowering, this one on new wood (the current season's growth). What this means is that if a freak late frost kills the first buds, you will at least be assured of a late-season flowering! And if you are growing Tiny Tuff Stuff™ in zone 5, you may only have that final flush each year -- but what a boon to have a Hydrangea that can flower at all with your frosty springs!

After the flowers, the show continues when the large, bright green leaves turn burgundy for fall. They will remain on the shrub for several weeks, showing off their autumn finery beautifully, before dropping for winter. Wow! That's a lot of color from such a small shrub!

No more than 2 feet high and wide, Tiny Tuff Stuff™ is a quick grower, establishing itself readily in moist soils receiving full sun (in the far north only) to part shade. Compact enough to put in a container on the patio or deck, it also makes an excellent foundation subject, woodland garden standout, and happy companion to perennials in the border as well as larger shrubs and trees. Versatile and easy, it asks only for plenty of water and a touch of relief from hot summer sun. (If you think it may be getting too much sun, compensate with extra water.)

Tiny Tuff Stuff™ grows best in hardiness zones 5 to 9. We cannot ship this plant to the following locations: Canada, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Guam, or Hawaii. Zones 5-9.

Hydrangea Incrediball Following just a few simple growing tips for hydrangea will produce healthy plants with fluffy colorful blooms year after year.

Planting Your Hydrangea

Planting your hydrangeas in early spring or in the fall is ideal. When you are planting a hydrangea, remember that the blooms and stems must be protected from strong winds and the hot afternoon sun. Avoid planting in open areas where strong winds could break stems. Planting on the eastern side of a building ensures that, in the afternoon, when the sun is at its hottest, your plants are in the shade.
Make sure your plant has good drainage. If the soil is too wet, the roots might rot, and the plant will die. Incorporate a lot of organic matter and an all-purpose slow-release fertilizer into the soil to give your hydrangea a strong start.

General Hydrangea Care

  • If you plant them in the summer, they need a lot more water in the beginning to establish the root system.
  • Most varieties thrive in full sun to part shade, as long as they are planted in moist, rich soil.
  • Water deeply once a week, and maybe more, if the weather is particularly hot or dry.
  • Hydrangea fertilization needs vary greatly, depending on your intended bloom color. Certain elements of the fertilizer affect the soil pH, which is a major determinant of bloom color in the pink/blue hydrangea varieties.
Hydrangea Planting:

Space according to ultimate size. Choose a good garden soil, high in organic matter that will help keep ample moisture available to the roots. The location should be sunny or partly shaded, the latter being preferable in dry areas.

If the pH of your soil is too high (alkaline), it can be reduced (made more acidic) by the addition of one tablespoon or more of Aluminum Sulfate per plant – this will make your flowers a deeper blue.

Maintenance:

An annual mulch of compost is beneficial. In very cold or exposed locations, “hill” up the soil and mulch the base of the plant with pine needles or leaves. Most species require little pruning except the removal of dead flower heads after blooming or in early spring.

For H. arborescens, prune the previous year’s flowering wood to the ground in early spring. For H. macrophylla (H. hortensis) and H. serrata, thin out two- or threeyear- old flowering shoots at ground level to promote vigorous new growth. H.petiolaris should be pruned only for aesthetics.

Wayside was founded in 1920 by two acclaimed growers who came together to pursue their shared vision of marketing all high-end plants for the serious garden enthusiast. Originally located in Mentor, Ohio, Wayside Gardens swiftly grew a reputation for the highest-quality plants and the most sophisticated clientele. In 1975, Wayside was purchased by the Park Seed Company, and moved to Hodges, SC.  The company has flourished since then, growing to become an undisputed leader in rare and unique plant growing.
