  • Description / Hydrangea Moonrock™ Panicle Hydrangea

A Bloomin' Easy® variety, Moonrock™ is a woody deciduous shrub offering year-round interest. This hardy panicle hydrangea grows 4 to 6 feet tall and wide and puts on a long-lasting floral display in your garden, blooming on new wood, beginning in midsummer until the first frost. Large and conical-shaped, the cream-colored flower heads emerge with an intense lime green center and fade to pink in late summer or early fall. The mophead-like clusters sit atop large, serrate, dark green leaves on short, strong stems, making long-lasting cuts for fresh and dried bouquets. Left in the garden, they attract pollinators, including bees and butterflies during the season, and after the first frost, the flower clusters turn tan to caramel, adding a textural element to the winter garden. The hollow stems also provide nesting habitats for bees.

Panicle hydrangeas are tough, cold hardy, and one of the easiest hydrangeas to grow. Moonrock is bred to be heat tolerant but performs well in cooler temperatures too, tolerating temperatures down to -40°F/ -40°C. Upright and multi-stemmed, the shrub grows and flowers best with 6 or more hours of full sun in locations with rich, loamy, moist, well-draining soil, but it's highly adaptable to a wide range of conditions and soils, including alkaline and clay soils. Cut back the plant by 1/3 its total height each spring, just as the new growth begins to emerge, to encourage abundant flowering. Panicle hydrangeas are generally pest resistant and more sun and drought tolerant than other hydrangeas.
