Description / Punica 'Sochi' Dwarf Pomegranate

Punica 'Sochi' Dwarf Pomegranate is a small deciduous (evergreen in tropical regions) multistemmed shrub from southern Russia, grown for its ornamental features. The plant's slender, arching branches are covered in glossy green leaves, which are accompanied by large, flamboyant orange-red flowers all summer, to early fall (July to September in California). Golf ball-sized bright orange-red ornamental fruits (pomegranates) follow, but are NOT EDIBLE.

A Punica granatum variety, commonly called pomegranate, 'Sochi' Dwarf makes an excellent accent or specimen and can also be trained as an espalier or grown as a container plant. This dwarf variety is an effective bonsai specimen too. In the garden, 'Sochi' grows quickly, reaching only about 4 feet tall at full maturity, but it can be pruned to maintain almost any desired size and shape. In a container, the plant will be smaller and in colder climates can be moved to a protected location to overwinter.

Extremely easy to grow, pomegranate is naturally adapted to regions with cool winters and long, hot, dry summers. It performs well in coastal or inland climates, growing best in a sunny, protected location with organically rich, dry to medium moist, well-draining soil. However, the plant thrives in a wide range of soils and tolerates drought once established. But it does benefit from a nitrogen-based fertilizer application in spring and an annual application of compost or well-rotted manure. 'Sochi' is pest and disease resistant.

Pomegranates are self-fertile and will bear fruit without any pollen from other varieties. 'Sochi' bears fruit 1 to 2 years after planting.

This pomegranate tree will ship at the appropriate planting time based on your growing zone. This pomegranate tree does not ship in December or January. Plant height is 18-36" when shipped.
