Description
A Proven Winners® ColorChoice® Flowering Shrubs variety, Weigela Midnight Wine Shine® is a small deciduous shrub offering spring through fall interest, blooming late spring to early summer. An improved selection, Midnight Wine Shine is grown primarily for its extremely glossy, dark burgundy to almost black foliage, darker and glossier than Midnight Wine®. The bush is free-flowering, and its pretty pink flowers are better than Midnight Wine's too and are very attractive to pollinators.
An excellent landscape plant, Midnight Wine Shine has a freely branching, compact, low-mounding habit and replaces berberis where it is banned. It is an excellent specimen in garden or container but is shown to best effect when grouped or massed and is especially nice in the front of beds and borders.
Cold hardy to Zone 4 and easy to grow, weigela grows best in sunny to partly shady locations with moderately fertile, moist, well-draining soil but tolerates clay soil. The parentage of Midnight Wine Shine comes from the Canadian variety 'Tango', so it has excellent hardiness and is less prone to tip dieback. Deer resistant.
