Description / Bletilla Hardy Garden Orchid

Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit

Bletilla Hardy Garden Orchid is a hardy terrestrial (ground dwelling) orchid that grows to a mature size of 12 to 14 inches tall and blooms for 10 weeks in late spring and early summer. The small, exotic, cattleya-like blooms are a pinkish-purple color and sit atop papery, lance-shaped, pale green leaves, which stay attractive all season, typically to first frost. The erect racemes of pretty flowers are somewhat reminiscent of the popular house plant Orchid Dendrobium but are smaller. The petite flowers make nice cuts for bouquets.

Bletilla strata, commonly called hardy garden orchid or Chinese ground orchid, is a hardy, clump-forming perennial (Zones 5-9) that is quite durable in a wide range of conditions, growing naturally in semi-wooded areas, in the shade of tall grass meadows, and along the edge of forests. They are perfect for patio pots, but grown in beds and borders in the garden, they will spread modestly.

Grow these low-maintenance, hardy garden orchids in a partially sunny, protected spot with organically rich, medium moist, freely draining soil. They are drought tolerant and virtually disease free. In Zone 5, where winter hardiness is not reliable, add a thick winter mulch.

In spring, plant these hardy garden orchid bulbs 4 feet deep, spaced 12 inches apart.
