Description / Alcea Yellow Hollyhock

Tall and stately, Alcea Yellow is a gorgeous hollyhock that grows to a mature height of 4 to 8 feet and blooms from mid to late summer. The towering spires are simply covered in 4- to 5-inch double flowers with layers and layers of ruffled petals in various shades of yellow. The bubbly blooms beckon butterflies and hummingbirds and make excellent cut flowers.

An Alcea rosea variety, commonly called hollyhock, Yellow is a cold hardy, herbaceous perennial that grows well in Zones 2-8. Although typically biennial, the plant will self-seed and return for many years to come. Yellow hollyhock has an old-world charm that is perfect for a cottage garden or butterfly garden. And its lofty spires are ideal for adding an architectural element in the garden and are especially nice planted against a wall or fence. They also create a gorgeous sunny backdrop or tall garden divider.

Yellow hollyhock grows best in a sunny spot with average, medium moist, freely draining soil, but it tolerates some shade and a wide range of soils. Applying a layer of mulch will help to keep the roots cool and moist. Hollyhocks tend to be deer resistant.

Plant Yellow hollyhock roots 2 to 3 inches deep in a large, roomy hole with the taproot pointing downward, spacing them 24 to 36 inches apart. Soak hollyhock roots for about an hour before planting.
