Description / Exotic Collector's Edition Amaryllis Bulbs

Plant Amaryllis Exotic Collector's Edition bulbs in your favorite containers for an array of unique and showy winter flowers that make great gifts and gorgeous holiday decor. The huge blooms rise on stately stems 18 to 30 inches tall, creating exciting displays full of bright colors that energize even the weariest winter days. And even though these beautiful blooms grace your space for weeks, watching the plants sprout, grow, and bloom may be the best part. Also, amaryllis are super easy to grow—they're virtually foolproof—so anyone can do it. They can be grown as annuals or regrown for years of enjoyment.

South American natives in the genus Hippeastrum, commonly called amaryllis, the bulbs in the Amaryllis Exotic Collector's Edition are tender and usually grown indoors in most USDA Zones, except for Zones 9-12, where they need to be protected during freezing temperatures.

To grow amaryllis indoors, select a 6- to 8-inch container and fill about half the pot with growing medium. Set the bulb atop the soil and fill in with soil around the bulb, maintaining its position, leaving the top 1/3 of the bulb exposed above the soil level and allowing room in the pot for watering. Amaryllis bulbs like room temperatures, and exposure to sunshine will keep them shorter. As the flower stalk grows towards the light, rotate the pot frequently to prevent toppling.

To re-grow amaryllis bulbs, cut off the flower stalk just above the neck of the bulb after flowering, being sure to leave the foliage, which nourishes the bulb, preparing it for future growth and blooming. Place the pot in a sunny window and only water when the soil is dry. Fertilize regularly. After the danger of frost has passed in spring, place the pot outside until fall. When frost kills the leaves off, remove the foliage and let the potted bulb rest by storing it in a cool, dry place for 2½ months. Do not water it. Thereafter, restart the growing process.

Outside, plant Amaryllis Exotic Collector's Edition bulbs 4 to 6 inches apart and 1 to 2 inches deep, water well to settle bulbs, and fertilize after the leaves appear, repeating several times in spring. Site bulbs in a sunny to partially shaded spot with freely draining soil. To replant bulbs outside, make sure the bulb neck is sticking out of the ground and follow the previous steps.

Amaryllis Exotic Collector's Edition contains one bulb each of the following six varieties:

Amaryllis Apricot Parfait
Amaryllis Benfica
Amaryllis Double Record
Amaryllis Santiago
Amaryllis Sweet Star
Amaryllis White Christmas
