Description / Garden Mix Amaryllis
Plant Amaryllis Garden Mix bulbs in your favorite pots for a plethora of colorful winter blooms that can reach 10 inches across. Amaryllis are popular gifts and holiday decorations that add color and a touch of drama to weary winter days with their elegant, boldly colored blooms rising 18 to 30 inches tall on stately stems. Watching them sprout and bloom is simply spellbinding. And it's even more exciting with this mix because each package contains a random potluck of bulbs that could contain double and/or single varieties in any or all colors, so each bulb presents a surpriseyou never know what to expect. Also, amaryllis are so easy to grow, they're virtually foolproof, and they bloom for weeks. You can grow them as annuals or regrow them for years of enjoyment.
The bulbs in this mix are South American natives in the genus Hippeastrum, commonly called amaryllis. In North America, these tender bulbs are typically grown indoors. Just select a 6- to 8-inch container and fill about half the pot with growing medium. Set the bulb atop the soil and fill in with soil around the bulb, maintaining its position, leaving the top 1/3 of the bulb exposed above the soil level and allowing room in the pot for watering. Amaryllis bulbs like room temperatures, and exposure to sunshine will keep them shorter. As the flower stalk grows towards the light, rotate the pot frequently to prevent toppling.
To re-grow follow these steps: After flowering, cut off the flower stalk just above the neck of the bulb, but be sure to leave the foliage, as it will play a critical role in nourishing the bulb and preparing it for future blooming. Place the pot in a sunny window and only water when the soil is dry. Feed bulbs regularly. After the danger of frost has passed in spring, place the pot outside until fall. When frost kills the leaves off, remove the foliage and let the potted bulb rest by storing it in a cool, dry place for 2½ months. Do not water it. Thereafter, restart the growing process.
Amaryllis can be planted outside in USDA Zones 9-12, as long as they are sited in a sunny to partially shaded spot and protected during freezing temperatures. Plant amaryllis bulbs 4 to 6 inches apart and 1 to 2 inches deep, water well to settle bulbs, and fertilize after the leaves appear, repeating several times in spring. To replant them outside, make sure the neck is sticking out of the ground and follow the previous steps.
