Description / Anemone 'St. Brigid Group' Windflower Bulbs

Plant Anemone 'St. Brigid Group' bulbs in fall (warm climates) or early spring after the last frost (cold climates), and in late spring to early the next summer, the pre-mixed bulbs bloom in large, double flowers. Borne singly atop long, sturdy stems up to 12 to 18 inches tall, the velvety, poppy-like blooms make dramatic cut flowers and attract butterflies to the garden.

'St. Brigid Group' contains Anemone coronaria varieties, commonly called wind flowers. These rhizomatous perennials (Zones 7-10) have a clumping, mounded habit of finely divided, ferny, medium green foliage. With their low-growing habit, they make great ground cover and are a good choice for woodland and rock gardens. This mix is shown to best effect when planted in large, sweeping drifts, with about 16 bulbs per square foot. But they also grow well in containers and decorative pots. Wind flowers are the perfect companion for late daffodils and later blooming tulips.

Extremely easy to grow, 'St. Brigid Group' anemones thrive in acid, alkaline, neutral, sandy, and loamy soils. They grow best in sunny locations but tolerate some light shade, especially in hot summer climates. Fertilize plants in spring when foliage begins to push through the soil. 'St. Brigid Group' wind flowers are deer and rabbit resistant.

Plant 'St. Brigid Group' anemone bulbs 3 to 6 inches apart and 2 to 3 inches deep. To stimulate the root development of spring-flowering bulbs, they require a "dormant" period of cold temperatures. In Zones 3-6, lift the bulbs in fall.

The small corms must be soaked in lukewarm water for several hours, preferably overnight, before planting.
