Description / Asclepias Green Beauty Milkweed
Asclepias Green Beauty Milkweed is a native wildflower that grows 24 to 36 inches tall and blooms in late spring to early summer, setting tiny green flowers with purple hoods in flattened to spherical clusters that crown thick stems clad with long, wide leaves, which serve as a food source for monarch butterfly larvae (caterpillars). The flowers are an important nectar source for pollinators and bring in many types of butterflies. They're followed by attractive seedpods, which are often used in dried floral displays.
An Asclepias viridis species, commonly called butterfly weed, green milkweed, or green antelopehorn, Green Beauty is an herbaceous perennial in Zones 4-9. Green Beauty's compact size and striking appearance makes it ideal for massing in butterfly gardens, native plant gardens, rock gardens, and modern landscapes, but it can also be grown in containers. Left undisturbed, green milkweed self-seeds freely, making it perfect for naturalizing, erosion control, and creating vibrant flowering borders.
Green Beauty green milkweed is highly adaptable and requires minimal care once established. It grows best in sunny areas with average, dry to medium moist, well-draining soils. However, it is also well-suited to poor, dry, and unimproved soils and exhibits good drought tolerance. This plant is naturally resistant to deer and rabbits, further enhancing its value in the garden.
Plant green milkweed in spring, spacing roots 12 to 16 inches apart and 1½ to 2 inches deep. Choose site selection carefully because butterfly weeds do not like to be disturbed once they are established.
A native plant, green milkweed is indigenous to the prairies, pastures, and fields from Nebraska to Texas east to Ohio and West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee and south from South Carolina to Florida. Native plants are not only beautiful but also environmentally friendly. Naturally adapted to the climate and soil conditions of the region, they thrive without fertilizers or extra watering, once established. They also act as natural pest controls, reducing the need for pesticides in the garden. Landscaping with native plants promotes biodiversity and provides shelter and quality food for wildlife and pollinators, bringing gardens to life.
