Description / Asclepias 'Ice Ballet' Milkweed

Asclepias 'Ice Ballet' Milkweed is a native wildflower that grows 36 to 48 inches tall and blooms prolifically throughout summer and into fall. Its large clusters of small, nectar-filled flowers are unusually pure white but still attract hummingbirds and butterflies in abundance. Additionally, its long, lush leaves provide an essential food source for monarch butterfly caterpillars. If you're willing to cut them, the flowers are excellent for fresh or dried bouquets, and the elegant seedpods that follow the blooms are perfect for seasonal floral arrangements.

Belonging to the Asclepias incarnata species, commonly known as butterfly weed, milkweed, or swamp milkweed, 'Ice Ballet' is a hardy perennial for Zones 3-9. This plant creates stunning flowering borders in the garden and is especially suited for planting near ponds or along stream banks. 'Ice Ballet' a must-have for butterfly gardens but can also be grown in a container.

'Ice Ballet' is a moisture-loving native that thrives in wet habitats such as swamps, marshes, bogs, and wet meadows. It performs best in full sun and medium to wet soils but will adapt to average garden soil as long as it receives consistent moisture, particularly in spring. However, 'Ice Ballet' has some drought tolerance once established. Naturally resistant to deer, 'Ice Ballet' is a low-maintenance addition to the landscape.

Plant 'Ice Ballet' milkweed roots in spring, spacing them 12 to 16 inches apart and burying them 1½ to 2 inches deep. Butterfly weed plants dislike being disturbed once established, so select a permanent spot for planting.

A native species, swamp milkweed is indigenous to the eastern and midwestern United States and Canada. These native plants are both stunning and eco-friendly, naturally suited to local climates and soils. Once established, they thrive without the need for fertilizers or excessive watering. They also act as natural pest controls, minimizing the need for pesticides in your garden. By incorporating native plants, you promote biodiversity and create vital habitats for wildlife and pollinators, turning your garden into a thriving ecosystem.
