Description / Astilbe Top Choice Cake Mix False Spirea
Plant Astilbe Top Choice Cake Mix bulbs before the first frost in fall, and they start blooming in early summer and bloom continuously throughout the season. The feathery plumes sit above fern-like foliage on stems that rise 18 to 30 inches tall. Each plume contains hundreds of colorful blossoms that open in succession, putting on a spectacular show and beckoning butterflies to the garden. They make showy cut flowers for floral display but should be cut when they are half opened.
These Astilbe cultivars, commonly called false spirea, have a mounding habit and rhizomatous root system, making them a great option for grouping or mass planting in mixed beds and borders. But they also make great specimen, focal point, and container plants. Astilbe are a must-have in a pollinator, butterfly, and cutting gardens.
Plant Astilbe Top Choice Cake Mix bulbs 18 to 30 apart and 1.5 to 2 inches deep in a partially shady to full shade spot with organically rich, evenly moist, freely draining soil. Feed bulbs with Espoma Organic® Bulb-tone® Bulb and Flower Food when new growth appears. Planting bulb perennials in fall helps them grow larger faster in the next growing season. Astilbes prefer cool, moist conditions and do not tolerate hot summer temperatures very well, but they are deer resistant and rabbit resistant.
Feathery perennial astilbe has colorful blooms and showy foliage. Astilbe plants are low maintenance and thrive in shade gardens. Learn how to plant and care for astilbe in our Astible Care Guide.
