Description / Begonia 'Golden Balcony' Bulbs

'Golden Balcony' is a tuberous begonia grown for its large, showy flowers that start blooming in early summer. Borne in clusters on thick, succulent stems adorned with wide, glossy leaves, the frilly double flowers come in a mix of orange and yellow shades. Typically grown as an annual, this tender perennial (Zones 9-10) grows to a mature size of about 6 to 8 inches tall and has a cascading habit that's perfect for containers, window boxes, and hanging baskets.

'Golden Balcony' is a Begonia boliviensis species, commonly called begonia, native to Bolivia and Peru. Although growing begonias requires warm temperatures, they will not perform in the hot, arid conditions of the desert Southwest or in the extreme heat of the Deep South.

'Golden Balcony' grows best in a partially shady spot. It will tolerate heavier shade and still bloom; however, best blooming occurs with some sun, preferably morning sun with afternoon shade in hot climates. Tuberous begonias prefer slightly acidic soil (5.5-6.5 pH) that is rich with organic matter and evenly moist. Tubers will rot in soggy soil, so it's important that the soil drains fast and freely. Remove flowers and leaves as they fade to encourage the plants to produce more blooms. 'Golden Balcony' begonia is deer resistant.

Plant 'Golden Balcony' begonia bulbs in groups in warmed spring soil after all threat of frost has passed, spaced 6 to 8 inches apart and 1 to 2 inches deep with concave side up. In the North, start tubers indoors late winter to early spring, planting 1 tuber per 7- to 10-inch pot, and move them outdoors once weather permits.
