A member of the Proven Winners® ColorChoice® Flowering Shrubs, Berberis Sunjoy Really Red™ Barberry is a compact deciduous shrub that grows to a mature size of 2 to 3 feet tall, with a similar width. Grown for its colorful foliage, this barberry has glossy, licorice red to burgundy leaves that develop a chartreuse ring on their margins in summer and maintain their bright color throughout the season.
A Berberis thunbergia variety, commonly called barberry or Japanese barberry, Sunjoy Really Red has a broad, rounded habit, and since its sterile, it won't spread and make a nuisance of itself in the garden. It's a brilliant specimen, and its compact size makes it a nice container plant or foundation plant in a small-space garden. But this barberry shrub is shown to best effect when mass planted.
Cold hardy to Zone 4, Sunjoy Really Red barberry is an easy-grow, easy-care plant. It thrives in sunny locations with average, moist, freely draining soils. The shrub tolerates drought and resists disease and damage from deer.
