Description

A Proven Winners variety, Sunjoy Sequins® is a deciduous flowering shrub offering 3 seasons of interest, grown for its slender branches bearing emerald leaves that emerge splashed with white and mint green, develop showy pink tones as the season progresses, and become a patchwork of pink by autumn. Although the shrub blooms in spring, the flowers are insignificant.

A Berberis thunbergii, commonly called barberry, Sunjoy Sequins has a freely branching, mounded, outwardly spreading habit and vigorous growth. This variegated shrub makes an eye-catching specimen but shows to best effect when massed or grouped in landscapes and borders. It is a good option for xeriscapes.

Cold hardy and easy to grow, Berberis Sunjoy Sequins prefers full sun to part sun and average, dry to medium moisture, well-drained soils. It adapts to a wide range of soils but does not tolerate poorly drained, wet soils. It is more shade tolerant than other barberries and is also heat and drought tolerant as well as deer resistant. Trim as needed in late spring/early summer. Occasional reversions to the original green form may occur and can be pruned out. However, hard pruning is not recommended and cutting into thick wood should be avoided unless entire branches are removed. Fun fact: barberry stems are yellow inside.
