Description / Blechnum spicant
This exceptional deer fern has two frond sets: an 8- to 24-inch long set of stiff, leathery, dark green sterile fronds that tend to grow horizontally and lay on the ground, forming an evergreen rosette that adds winter interest; and a 16- to 24-inch long set of fertile fronds that grow vertically, rising and fountaining from the center of the crown, and wither at summer's end.
Plant with big, bold shade plants, such as hydrangea and hosta, to add contrasting fine, ferny texture. Deer and rabbit resistant.
Uses: Shade Garden, Border, Under Story Planting
Genus name comes from the classical Greek name blechnon for a fern
