Description / Fragaria 'White Carolina' Strawberry

'White Carolina' is an attractive, low-growing plant that's suitable for an edible landscape. It grows 8 to 10 inches tall and blooms in five-petaled flowers that attract pollinators, including butterflies. The flowers are followed by small to medium-sized, white to pale pink berries speckled with red seeds. The sweet berries have a light pink interior, a nice aroma, and a distinctive pineapple-like flavor, which is what makes it unique from traditional strawberries. Considered an everbearing, or day-neutral variety, 'White Carolina' has the ability to produce fruit continuously throughout the growing season. These unusual berries are gaining in popularity because of their extraordinary appearance and delicious flavor.

Fragaria chiloensis, commonly called pineberry (combination of the words pineapple and strawberry), 'White Carolina' is a vigorous perennial plant (Zones 5-8) that has a spreading habit, sending out many above-ground runners that root and form new plants, increasing the yield of berries each year. But 'White Carolina' can also be grown in patio pots or hanging baskets.

Grow 'White Carolina' strawberry in a sunny location with 6+ hours of direct sun each day. Although strawberries are adaptable to a range of climates, they prefer mild, temperate climates. 'White Carolina' strawberry is deer resistant.

Plant 'White Carolina' non-GMO strawberry roots in spring after the danger of frost has passed, spacing them 12 to 24 inches apart and 2 to 3 inches deep with their crowns at soil level. Before planting, remove the rubber band, rinse the roots, and gently separate them. 'White Carolina' is not genetically modified.

Note: Classification of strawberry varieties is somewhat subjective as it varies on regional practices and specific growing conditions.
