Description / Gladiolus 'Mon Amour' Bulbs
'Mon Amour' is a large-flowering gladiolus that grows to between 36 and 60 inches tall, adding a stunning architectural element to the garden. 'Mon Amour' blooms midsummer, producing ruffled flower spikes dense with unique bicolor blooms having silky petals in various pastel shades of lavender and yellow. Borne on strong, slender scapes, the flowers rise above a lush fan of sword-shaped leaves and open from the bottom up, creating an awe-inspiring display. Long lasting, the flower spikes make truly lovely monofloral bouquets.
A Gladiolus x hortulanus variety, commonly called gladiolus, glads, or sword lilies, 'Mon Amour' is a tender perennial in Zones 8-10. Plant 'Mon Amour' gladiolus in groups within beds, borders, or containers for a dramatic floral show. In breezy areas, taller varieties may require staking for stability.
'Mon Amour' gladiolus are adaptable flowers that thrive in full sun to partial shade, preferring rich, porous soil that drains efficiently but retains some moisture. Amend overly sandy or heavy clay soils with organic materials like bark or peat moss. Fertilize lightly after planting and again during summer. Water thoroughly during planting and regularly during growth and blooming to ensure moisture reaches the roots. Use mulch to maintain even soil moisture and temperature.
Select a spot sheltered from wind and plant bulbs in warm spring soil once frost risks have passed. Space them 6 to 8 inches apart and plant them 6 to 8 inches deep. For extended flowering, plant additional bulbs every two weeks throughout the season. After blooming, let the foliage grow until it browns or just before frost arrives. Lift, clean, and dry the corms, then store them in a cool, dry location (40-50°F) for winter.
