Description / Hydrangea Gatsby Glow Ball™ Oakleaf Hydrangea

A member of the Proven Winners® ColorChoice® Flowering Shrubs series, Hydrangea Gatsby Glow Ball™ Oakleaf Hydrangea is a dwarf shrub that grows to a mature size of about 3 to 4 feet tall and wide and flowers from early to late summer. The large, showy white panicles emerge crisp and clean before aging to green. Pollinator friendly, they attract bees and butterflies to the garden but also make lovely cut flowers for fresh or dried floral arrangements. But its flowers are only part of its charm. In fall, its large, lobed, oak-like leaves turn brilliant shades of red, purple, and bronze, extending its season of interest. And the flowerheads turn tan to caramel, adding a textural element to the winter garden. The hollow stems also provide nesting habitats for bees.

A Hydrangea quercifolia variety, commonly called oakleaf hydrangea, Gatsby Glow Ball is a small, multi-stemmed shrub with a tidy, rounded habit that fits perfectly in a container or a garden bed in a small urban garden. This appealing plant can be planted as a specimen, foundation accent, or as groupings. It makes an excellent informal shrub border or mass planting in open woodland areas.

Gatsby Glow Ball is easy to grow and maintain. It grows best in a sunny to partly sunny location and performs well in most well-draining soils, even in clay soils. It tolerates heat and the salty sea air along the coasts.

A native plant, oakleaf hydrangea is indigenous to North America. Native plants are not only beautiful but also environmentally friendly. Naturally adapted to the climate and soil conditions of the region, they thrive without fertilizers or extra watering, once established. They also act as natural pest controls, reducing the need for pesticides in the garden. Landscaping with native plants promotes biodiversity and provides shelter and quality food for wildlife and pollinators, bringing gardens to life.
