Description / Liatris Mixed Blazing Star Bulbs

Liatris Mixed Blazing Star is a perfect pairing of 2 varieties of summer-blooming native wildflowers (Alba and Spicata) that typically grow between 24 to 48 inches tall, though they can reach up to 6 feet in its natural habitat. Known for their striking ornamental appeal, these plants produce tall flower spikes adorned with dense, button-like white and purple-pink blooms and slender, grass-like leaves. Blooming in July and August, they bring stunning vertical interest to the garden. The nectar- and pollen-rich flowers attract native bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, while the seeds that follow are a favorite of songbirds. Feathery and fragrant, the tufted flower heads are a florist's favorite, often featured in fresh and dried arrangements.

These Liatris spicata varieties are commonly called blazing star or gayfeather, among other names. They are hardy, clump-forming perennials that thrive in Zones 3-9 and are found growing naturally in moist lowlands, meadows, and marsh edges. Their striking appearance makes them ideal for planting in masses, creating a breathtaking display in pollinator gardens and perennial borders.

Low maintenance and easy to grow, Mixed Blazing Star varieties thrive in full sun with well-draining, average to moist soils that are neutral to slightly acidic (pH <6.8). They handle summer heat and humidity well and also demonstrate good drought tolerance.

In spring, plant Mixed Blazing Star bulbs 1½ to 2 inches deep and space them 18 inches apart for optimal growth.

Indigenous to the eastern United States, Liatris spicata (blazing star) is a native species that is both beautiful and eco-friendly. These plants are naturally adapted to local climates and soil conditions, allowing them to thrive without additional fertilizers or excessive watering once established. They also serve as natural pest controls, reducing the need for chemical pesticides. Incorporating native plants like blazing stars into your landscape promotes biodiversity, supports pollinators, and provides essential shelter and food for wildlife, creating a vibrant, sustainable garden.
