Description / Liatris White Blazing Star Bulbs

Liatris White Blazing Star is a summer-blooming native wildflower that typically grows 24 to 48 inches tall but can grow up to 6 feet tall in its native habitat. Highly ornamental, it is grown for its tall flower spikes dense with button-shaped white blossoms and clad in linear, grass-like leaves that grace the garden in July and August, adding wonderful vertical visual interest. Nectar and pollen rich, the subtly fragrant flowers support native bees as well as butterflies and hummingbirds. Small seeds follow the flowers and are attractive to songbirds. The elongated, tufted flower heads have a feathery appearance that's made them a favorite of florists, who use them in fresh and dried arrangements.

A Liatris spicata variety, commonly called blazing star or gayfeather, White Blazing Star is a cold-hardy, clump-forming perennial (Zones 3-9) that grows naturally in moist low grounds, meadows, and marsh margins. It is simply stunning planted en mass and is a must-have in any pollinator garden or perennial border.

A low maintenance plant, White Blazing Star grows best in a sunny location with average to moist, neutral to slightly acidic (pH <6.8), well-drained soils. It stands up to summer heat and humidity and has tolerates drought once established.

In spring, plant White Blazing Star bulbs 1½ to 2 inches deep, spaced 18 inches apart.

Liatris spicata is a native species indigenous to eastern United States. Native plants are not only beautiful but also environmentally friendly. Naturally adapted to the climate and soil conditions of the region, they thrive without fertilizers or extra watering, once established. They also act as natural pest controls, reducing the need for pesticides in the garden. Landscaping with native plants promotes biodiversity and provides shelter and quality food for wildlife and pollinators, bringing gardens to life.
