Description / Monarda Ice Out Bee Balm
Monarda Ice Out Bee Balm is a native hybridized wildflower that grows 36 to 48 inches tall and blooms in July and August. Borne atop square stems, large, decorative clusters of tubular flowers appear in dense, rounded, terminal tufts. Their bright, cool-white color; citrusy, tea-like scent; and rich nectar attract bumble bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds to the garden. The flowers are edible, along with the aromatic, mint-scented leaves, which are used in teas, beverages, and desserts.
A Monarda didyma variety, commonly called bee balm or bergamot, Ice Out is a hardy and vigorous herbaceous perennial (Zones 4-10) with an upright habit. Planted Zone appropriately, it will return year after year, and it will spread by creeping rhizomes and self-seeding, easily forming a sizeable colony. Ice Out bee balm is perfect for naturalized plantings or for massing along streams and around ponds. It is a must-have in a butterfly garden or cottage garden and makes a great border plant or specimen plant in garden or container.
Ice Out bee balm is not picky and will grow just about anywhere it's planted. Bee balm thrives in a sunny to dappled shade spot, but best flowering is in full sun; however, some afternoon shade may be appreciated, especially in hot summer climates. Rich, moisture-retentive soils are best, as bee balm should never be allowed to dry out completely. Adding a layer of mulch will help keep the soil moist and cool. Deadheading faded flowers prolongs blooming and prevents unwanted self-seeding. Deer resistant. In spring, plant Ice Out Bee Balm roots 1½ to 2 inches deep, spaced 18 inches apart.
Bee balm is a native plant, indigenous to eastern North America, from Maine to Minnesota south to Missouri and Georgia. Native plants are not only beautiful but also environmentally friendly. Naturally adapted to the climate and soil conditions of the region, they thrive without fertilizers or extra watering, once established. They also act as natural pest controls, reducing the need for pesticides in the garden. Landscaping with native plants promotes biodiversity and provides shelter and quality food for wildlife and pollinators, bringing gardens to life.
