Clematis FAQs

Do you cut back clematis every year?

The first year after planting, clematis should be cut back to about 5 inches from the ground in late winter/early spring. From there, it depends what pruning group your clematis plant is in. Pruning Group 1 should only be cut back when needed after spring blooming. Pruning Group 2 should be cut back in March to remove dead wood. Pruning Group 3 should be cut back hard each year in March to about 12 inches from the ground.

Do clematis vines like full sun or shade?

Clematis vines prefer their foliage in full sun and their roots in cool, shaded conditions—achieved by low-growing plants or a layer of mulch.

Where is the best place to plant a clematis vine?

Clematis thrives in rich, loose, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Clematis vines should be planted with their roots in cool, shaded conditions and their foliage in full sun. This makes clematis ideal for interplanting among roses, trees, and shrubs, providing a stunning vertical element for your garden and privacy for your outdoor living space.

Are clematis plants hard to care for?

Clematis plants are not hard to care for, but do require attention. They need regular watering during periods of drought, but it's important avoid waterlogging to prevent root diseases. Learn more in our clematis care guide.
