Description / Philadelphus Pearls of Perfume

Philadelphus Pearls of Perfume is a flowering deciduous shrub offering 3 seasons of interest, blooming in late spring and reblooming reliably through summer. Borne along erect branches dense with medium green foliage, abundant clusters of large, pure white, fully double flowers perfume the air with an intense citrusy orange-blossom scent, attracting bees and butterflies. The long-lasting, sterile, sweet-scented flowers are a great addition to floral arrangements.

A Philadelphus hybrid, commonly called mock orange or sweet mock orange, Philadelphus Pearls of Perfume is a well-branched shrub with a compact, upright habit that grows to a mature size of 3 to 4 feet tall and 2 feet wide. Although it makes an excellent specimen or "thriller" in a container garden, it is shown to best effect when massed or grouped in mixed beds, borders, or foundation plantings.

An easy-care plant, mock orange grows best in sunny to dappled sun locations with organically rich, moist soils, but it tolerates a wide range of soils, including alkaline soils, loam, and compacted clay, if they are well-draining. Philadelphus Pearls of Perfume is disease resistant. It does not require pruning, but any desired shaping should be done after flowering.

Philadelphus Pearls of Perfume is a hybrid cross made in March of 2011 between an unpatented and unpatented proprietary plant from the inventor's breeding program of Philadelphus x virginalis, accession no. G13598, (the female parent) and Philadelphus lewsii 'Snow Velvet' (the unpatented male parent).
