Description / Red Gem Goumi

There are so many reasons to cherish Red Gem™ we're not sure where to begin! This bush is popular in the eastern part of the globe and for good reason. In May it bursts into life with lily white blooms which draw bees to the garden in droves and produce a heady sweet fragrance that is just delightful. By summer those lovely flowers have ripened into juicy red grape-like fruit which is as fun to eat as they are to admire on the branch. Being a highly productive perennial, a healthy Red Gem™ can reliably produce between 10 and 15 pounds of fruit a season. Even when not in bloom or bearing fruit this shrub is handsomely decked in light, silver toned green foliage that is a boost to any landscape.

Goumi is not only beautiful and productive, but also reliably tough and self-reliant. While it is semi-self fertile, we recommend planting similar cultivars near it for biggest fruit yields. One of its coolest tricks is its nitrogen fixing powers which come from the symbiotic relationship it has with actinobacterium Frankia in the soil. This means that it come thrive even in poorer soils and there's no need to fertilize it. It boasts high resistance to pests and disease so you can virtually plant it and forget it!
