Description / Rhododendron Sweet Reward™ Coral Azalea

A Proven Winners® ColorChoice® Flowering Shrubs variety, Rhododendron Sweet Reward™ Coral Azalea is a deciduous shrub with a mature size of about 3 to 6 feet tall and wide. This eye-catching, hardy native shrub simply sparkles in the spring landscape, setting large, showy, rounded clusters of brilliantly colored flowers saturated in shades of salmon and splashed with bright orange spots. Incredibly fragrant and pollinator friendly, the flowers attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds to the garden.

A Rhododendron hybrid, commonly called azalea, Sweet Reward Coral has an upright habit. Use this gorgeous shrub as a specimen or mass in beds, borders, and foundation plantings. Sweet Reward Coral is a must-have in a shade gardens.

An easy-to-grow shrub, Sweet Reward azalea grows best in a sunny to partly sunny spot in the garden or landscape. It prefers moist, well-draining soil with plenty of organic matter and an acidic pH, generally around 5.0 to 5.5. But it grows well in most soils, including clay soils.

A native shrub, azalea is indigenous to North America. Native plants are not only beautiful but also environmentally friendly. Naturally adapted to the climate and soil conditions of the region, they thrive without fertilizers or extra watering, once established. They also act as natural pest controls, reducing the need for pesticides in the garden. Landscaping with native plants promotes biodiversity and provides shelter and quality food for wildlife and pollinators, bringing gardens to life.

Sweet Reward Coral azalea was developed from North American native species by NCSU's Dr. Jim Ballington.
