Description / Rhododendron Pinxterbloom Azalea

Formerly known as, and synonymous with, R. nudiflorum, this native shrub is endemic to moist woods, swamp margins, and open areas from Massachusetts to South Carolina and Tennessee.

Rhododendron Pinxterbloom Azalea is a dense, bushy, suckering deciduous shrub that typically grows 5 feet tall but will reach 10 feet in ideal conditions. It blooms in April, slightly before the foliage, in clusters of funnel-shaped, lightly fragrant, soft pink to white to lavender flowers with long stamens, attracting butterflies and hummingbirds.

This azalea prefers acidic, humusy, organically rich, moisture-retentive, but well-drained soil and dappled sunlight, but it tolerates dryish, sandy, or rocky soils and full sun in cool summer climates.

Uses: Mixed Beds, Borders, Hedge Plant, Mass Planting, Specimen
