Description / Sorbaria Cherry On Top™

A Bloomin' Easy® variety, Sorbaria Cherry On Top™ is an ornamental deciduous shrub offering 3 seasons of interest, grown for its dramatic muliticolored, fern-like foliage, beautiful summer blooms, and flamboyant fall fruits. In spring, the dense leaves emerge vivid pink to red and then turn chartreuse with bronze tips before maturing light green for summer. A floriferous bloomer, the plant sets masses of showy pyramidal white flower plumes followed in fall by bright red seed pods—the cherry on top. The seeds persist throughout winter, extending the season of interest, and offering hungry birds an excellent food source. Both flowers and foliage are popular additions to floral arrangements, fresh and dried.

A Sorbaria sorbifolia, commonly called false spirea, Cherry On Top has a compact, mounding habit and a moderate growth rate. It spreads by suckering roots to form colonies, which makes it a great option for erosion control on banks and slopes. Shown to best effect when massed or grouped, Cherry On Top is perfect for shrub borders and mixed beds.

Extremely cold hardy and easy to grow, false spirea prefers a sunny to partly sunny location with average, organically rich, medium moist, well-draining soil. The plant is drought and heat tolerant, deer resistant, and pet friendly. Prune close to the ground in late winter to early spring to rejuvenate the plant.
