Description
Meet the longest-blooming spring bulb in the garden. 'Jessie' is a member of the Ipheion family, a close relative of Allium, and blooms heavily in shade. You will love these gentian-blue flowers for up to 8 weeks in the spring garden.
The blooms themselves have a pleasant floral aroma, and the foliage retains an onion-like scent which proves very useful in repelling nibbling animals from rabbits to deer. The foliage is broad and strappy and the flowers suffused with color. Ipheion 'Jessie' is far and away the showiest Starflower we have ever grown.
This little plant reaches just a few inches high when not in bloom. Topped with flowers, Ipheion 'Jessie' is 9 to 12 inches high, its foliage often going dormant in the warmer weeks of summer, only to reappear in autumn.
Ipheion 'Jessie' was developed from the popular variety 'Rolf Feidler' by Tony Hall of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, and we are delighted to make Ipheion 'Jessie' available to Wayside gardeners this season. The bulb is native to South America, and naturalizes readily.
