Description / Thuja 'Green Giant' Arborvitae

Thuja 'Green Giant' is one of the fastest growing of all conifers. This very rare western red cedar will put on 3 to 5 feet of growth per year. An excellent evergreen privacy screen or windbreak, it's also tremendously dense, weather-resistant, repellent to deer, and marvelously fragrant. This is the tree you want outlining your property, shielding you from noise, neighbors, or rough wind.

Elegant and uniform, the conical habit of 'Green Giant' needs no shearing or pruning, and is cloaked in dense, dark, evergreen foliage clear to the ground. Of course, you can also shear the foliage into any desired shape and keep the plant trimmed to just the size you want.

And this is a very easy plant to grow, tolerating almost any soil type and resisting damage from ice and snow, as well as from deer and most other pests. 'Green Giant' is able to withstand drought well, and once established, is very resistant to heat, humidity, and cold.

The most vigorous growth will be in full sun and enriched soil with plenty of water and fertilizer, especially the first few years. 'Green Giant' can also tolerate a bit of shade.

Although Thuja exhibit deer resistance, no species is completely immune, so young trees require monitoring and protection when food is scarce.

I purchased 26 Thuja "Green Giant" Arborvitae in 2024 to create a screen between my house and the neighbors. I specifically purchased these because of the "even deer leave it alone" statement. I live in Michigan, and the deer have eaten every last one of them!! If you have deer in your yard, they will be eaten before they have a chance to grow. False and inaccurate description of Thuja "Green Giant" Arborvitae.

    Response from store

Thank you for sharing your experience—we’re so sorry to hear that deer have been eating your Thuja 'Green Giant' Arborvitae. While these trees are considered deer-resistant, it’s important to note that no plant is truly deer-proof, especially when food is scarce.
Deer may eat plants that are typically unappealing to them, even those that are known to be toxic, if they are hungry enough. "Deer-resistant" simply means that a plant is less palatable or has characteristics that usually deter deer, not that it is completely immune to browsing.
We understand how frustrating this must be and appreciate your feedback.

I planted 2 about 15 years ago and they grew quickly! Nice green color, all the way to the ground. You cannot see the trunk because it’s SO full!! Wish I would have put in more of them because we go new neighbors and now we really need a privacy fence. Just planted 6 more and hope they grow just as fast.

I planted my Thuja Green when they were only 3ft to 4 ft tall 12 years ago and they are all above the roof line of my 2 story home.
