Description / Allium Nevskianum Ornamental Onion Bulbs

Plant Allium Nevskianum ornamental onion bulbs before the first frost in fall, and they bloom from summer through fall the following year. A rare dwarf variety, this superb, highly decorative allium only grows 4 to 6 inches tall, with its large orbs dense with deep-purple florets sitting atop a basal rosette of very large and strappy, bluish grey-green leaves. The fragrant, nectar-rich blooms beckon to pollinators in the garden, including bees, butterflies and hummingbirds; but they make charming cut-flower bouquets too.

An Allium nevskianum species, commonly called ornamental onion or Turkistan onion, Nevskianum is a bulbous perennial with an upright habit. In the same family as garlic, onions, chives, and shallots, ornamental alliums have the added advantage of beautiful blooms with interesting shapes, colors, and textures. These low-growing ornamental onions are a great option for patio pots, mixed beds, and the front of borders. Alliums are a great option to layer with grape hyacinths and anemones in a lasagna planting for a mixed bouquet look in garden or container.

Plant Nevskianum allium bulbs 6 inches apart and 4 to 6 inches deep and water well to settle bulbs. Once the plants begin to grow in summer, feed them with Espoma Organic® Bulb-tone® Bulb and Flower Food. Alliums are easy to grow as long as they are placed in a bright, sunny spot with soil that drains freely. Continuously soggy soil will cause bulbs to rot. If flower production decreases due to overcrowding, dig, divide, and replant the bulbs. Ornamental onions are rarely damaged by deer or rodents. Allium Nevskianum grows naturally in dry mountains at high elevations, so its drought tolerant and cold hardy to Zone 3.
