Description / Amsonia 'String Theory' Bluestar

A Proven Winners® variety, Amsonia 'String Theory' Bluestar is a perennial grown for its feathery foliage and fabulous flowers. The medium green threadleaf leaves remain beautiful and healthy throughout the summer, adding a soft textural element to the garden all season. It's topped with clusters of light periwinkle blue flowers in late spring and takes on brilliant golden orange color in fall. Both flowers and foliage are popular additions to floral arrangements.

An Amsonia hubrichtii, commonly called bluestar, blue star, blue star amsonia, threadleaf blue star, or Arkansas amsonia, 'String Theory' is a compact version of the industry standard. It has a slow growth rate and an upright, clumping habit. The plant makes a lovely specimen in the garden and a gorgeous thriller in a mixed container, but it is shown to best effect when grouped or massed in beds and borders.

An easy-care plant, bluestar grows best in sunny to partly shady locations with average to fertile well-drained soil but tolerates poor soils. The plant is heat and humidity tolerant, but it may benefit from some afternoon shade in hot summer regions; however, the best fall color occurs in full sun. It is moderately drought tolerant once established and deer resistant.

A native plant, bluestar is indigenous to North America. Native plants are not only beautiful but also environmentally friendly. Naturally adapted to the climate and soil conditions of the region, they thrive without fertilizers or extra watering, once established. They also act as natural pest controls, reducing the need for pesticides in the garden. Landscaping with native plants promotes biodiversity and provides shelter and quality food for wildlife and pollinators, bringing gardens to life.
