Description
Astilbe 'Washington' is a hardy deciduous perennial offering midsummer interest. The plant produces dense, fluffy white plumes. Borne on sturdy stems, the fragrant flowers make excellent cuts for fresh and dried arrangements. Attractive end-of-season dried seed heads extend the plant's ornamental interest into autumn.
Typical of Astilbe japonica, commonly called false spirea or false goat's beard, 'Washington' is a rhizomatous herbaceous plant. It has an upright, clump-forming habit of fern-like exceptionally dark green foliage, a medium growth rate, and slowly spreads by rhizomes. The plant works well in containers, mixed beds, and borders, and is an especially nice addition to shade gardens.
Easy to grow and low maintenance, Astilbe 'Washington' prefers moderate shade and organically rich, moist, well-drained, humusy soil. The plant should not be allowed to dry out. It is deep shade tolerant but flowers better with some sun. Deer and rabbit resistant.
