Description / Fritillaria Blend Crown Imperial Bulbs
Plant Fritillaria Blend bulbs before the first frost in fall, and in mid-spring, they begin to bloom. This beautiful blend of orange-flowered Fritillaria 'Rubra' and yellow-flowered Fritillaria 'Lutea' creates a truly spectacular display with huge, showy clusters of downward-facing, bell-shaped flowers topped with a pineapple-like tuft of spiky leaves. They rise 36 to 40 inches high on thick, straight stems covered in whorls of lance-shaped, glossy green leaves around their lower half. The exotic, boldly colored pendants are nectar-rich, so they attract pollinators to the garden, including bees and butterflies. But they also make unique cut flowers for spring bouquets and mixed floral arrangements.
Fritillaria imperialis cultivars, also known as crown imperial lilies, this Fritillaria blend contains bulbous herbaceous perennials with an upright habit. The bulbs will multiply each year, and the plants will spread over time. Imperial lilies are shown to best effect when planted in groups or masses in garden beds and borders.
Fritillaria grows well in sunny spots, but in hot summer climates, some afternoon shade may be beneficial. The soil should be moist but freely draining and never soggy. Allow foliage to die naturally and remove only after fully wilting. Leaves continue to absorb nourishment that feeds the bulb, which aids future growth and blooming. The bulbs and flowers of crown imperial lilies have a unique scent that helps repel rodents and deer.
Plant Fritillaria bulbs immediately upon receipt to keep them from drying out. Place bulbs 8 inches apart and 5 to 6 inches deep and set them at a 45-degree angle so that the water doesn't sit in the bulbs' stem hole. Water well to settle bulbs, and feed them with a well-balanced fertilizer. Allow foliage to die naturally and remove only after fully wilting. Leaves continue to absorb nourishment that feeds the bulb, which aids future growth and blooming.
