Description / Mangave Art & Sol™ 'Night Owl'
A member of the Proven Winners® ART & SOL™ collection, 'Night Owl' is a compact succulent, reaching 6 to 8 inches tall and 16 to 18 inches wide. 'Night Owl' mangave adds bold architectural symmetry to garden or container with its dramatic rosette of broad leaves that looks amazing from any angle. Thick and arching, the recurved leaves have undulating, spiny margins and a nearly black hue from heavy dark purple spotting, which will be most prominent when grown in full sun.
A second-generation intergeneric cross of Manfreda x Agave, Mangave 'Night Owl' has an upright, mounded habit and a moderate to rapid growth rate, which comes from its Manfreda parentage. It is a frost-tender herbaceous plant with excellent heat and drought tolerance coming from its Agave background. 'Night Owl' mangave can be grown as a perennial in southern Zones (9-11), but it must be overwintered as a houseplant or grown as an annual in more northern Zones.
'Night Owl' is a stunning addition to garden beds and borders, whether as a solitary specimen or in a mass planting alongside agastache, ajuga, dianthus, iberis, lavandula, and sedum. It is also an excellent container plant and makes an exciting thriller in a mixed container. 'Night Owl' is a xerophytic plant that requires minimal water once established, so it is a good option for xeriscapes, rock, alpine, and waterwise gardens. But it thrives in a wide range of moisture conditions, so it can be mixed with annuals, succulents, and tropicals.
'Night Owl' tolerates heat, drought, and poor soil and will perform in those sunny, hot, dry or hard to water areas in the garden. However, it grows best in average soil that's medium moist and freely draining. Deer and rabbits typically leave mangave alone. A one-time application of Organic Diehard™ Transplant Stress Relief will get your plant off to the best possible start.
Mangave 'Night Owl' has native parentage, indigenous to arid and semi-arid regions of Central and North America. Native plants are not only beautiful but also environmentally friendly. Naturally adapted to the climate and soil conditions of the region, they thrive without fertilizers or extra watering, once established. They also act as natural pest controls, reducing the need for pesticides in the garden. Landscaping with native plants promotes biodiversity and provides shelter and quality food for wildlife and pollinators, bringing gardens to life.
