Description / Narcissus Dutch Master Daffodil Bulbs
Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit 1995
An improvement on the famous King Alfred daffodil, Dutch Master is the quintessential daffodil, with classic form and color. Dutch Master daffodil is an award-winning variety that has been popular with gardeners since the mid-1950s. Plant Dutch Master daffodil bulbs in autumn before the first frost, and early the next spring it blooms in large flowers with saturated yellow petals surrounding a huge trumpet. Borne singly on long, strong stems rising to a height of 18+ inches, these delightful flowers make perfect cuts for brilliant bunched bouquets.
A Narcissus pseudonarcissus, commonly called daffodil, Dutch Master has an upright habit and fast growth rate. It multiplies and naturalizes easily, with its sprawling clumps of long, flat, strap-like foliage and showy blooms appearing year after year, possibly for decades, in ideal conditions with adequate space, sunlight, water, and fertilizer. Best planted in groups or masses, daffodils are versatile plants that work equally well in mixed beds, borders, and containers. Consider planting large sweeping drifts in open woodland areas, in masses under deciduous trees, and in smaller groupings in front of shrubs. They mix well with ground covers and other spring-blooming bulbs in the garden, but daffodils are also a great option for forcing indoors for winter blooms.
Narcissus Dutch Master is a bulbous perennial that's super easy to grow and maintain. Cold hardy (to Zone 3), these daffodils prefer areas with cool, wet winters and warm, dry summers; but they typically grow and perennialize well in USDA Hardiness Zones 5-9. Daffodils grow best in sunny to partly shady locations with rich, fertile, well-draining soil having a neutral to acidic pH. Water daffodils during the growth period, but keep in mind, bulbs do not like soggy soils. When planting, be sure to allow adequate space between bulbs and plant them at the proper depth8 inches apart and 6 inches deep. For robust flowering during the current season as well as the following spring season, feed bulbs with a well-balanced fertilizer, such as Espoma Organic® Bulb-tone® Bulb and Flower Food, as soon as growth begins in spring. After flowers bloom, allow foliage to die back naturally and cut back once fully faded. Dutch Master daffodils are relatively pest-free and deer resistant.
