Description / Papaver Collection Poppy

This Poppy Collection pairs two great poppy varieties—Papaver rhoeas Red and Papaver nudicaule 'Pink Ruffles'—for a bold color mix. Five roots of each variety are included, individually packaged and labeled. The plants grow 18 to 24 inches tall and bloom prolifically in spring in the South (before the summer heat) and in summer in the North. The flowers are borne singly on long, bristly stems and are showcased against a backdrop of thistle-like gray-green leaves, which give the plants an airy appearance. The blooms attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds but also make stunning cut-flower bouquets. Harvest the flowers just as buds begin to open and sear the ends of freshly cut stems.

Poppy Collection varieties are clump-forming, cold-hardy, herbaceous perennials (Zones 3-8). The clumps grow larger each year but are not invasive. Group these poppy varieties in beds and borders or mass plant in the landscape. Poppies can also be forced indoors with special treatment.

Cold weather plants, poppies prefer the cool temperatures of spring and fall. They may struggle in the summer heat and humidity of the South. Poppy plants grow best a sunny location with organically rich, medium moist, well-drained soil. But they also grow well in average and even poor soils, but they hate wet feet and do not tolerate soggy soils. Although the Poppy Collection varieties are cold hardy, adding a layer of mulch or pine needles for winter protection may be beneficial in Zones 3 to 6. Allow poppies to die back during the summer after flowering and stop watering the plants, as excess watering may kill the plants. Deer resistant.

Plant Poppy Collection roots in spring, spacing them 12 to 18 inches apart. Choose placement carefully because poppies don't like to be disturbed once they're established. If they must be moved or divided, do so in fall.
