Description / Hydrangea Quick Fire Fab® Panicle Hydrangea
A Proven Winners® ColorChoice® Flowering Shrub, Hydrangea Quick Fire Fab® is a tall shrub that grows between 6 to 8 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet wide. One of the first panicle hydrangeas to bloom, Quick Fire Fab sets big, full mopheads on new wood beginning in early summer, adding at least 2 extra weeks to the seasonal display. Freely blooming, the pyramidal flowerheads have unusual x-shaped flowers that give them a unique textural appearance. They continually change color as the season progresses, emerging white, blushing pink from the bottom up as they age, and eventually turning bright pink before finishing in shades of red. Borne on strong, sturdy stems, the billowy multihued blooms stand erect on the shrub but also make stunning cut flowers for summer bouquets and mixed flower arrangements, fresh or dried. Left in the garden, the blooms last into fall, turning tan to caramel, adding textural interest to the garden throughout winter.
A Hydrangea paniculata, commonly called panicle hydrangea, Quick Fire Fab is a deciduous shrub with an upright habit and vigorous growth. It's a supreme specimen, bed, border, or foundation plant, but it creates a truly striking flowering hedge or summer privacy screen for a patio. And it can even be grown in a large container.
Tough, reliable plants, panicle hydrangeas have an easy-going nature that makes them a pleasure to grow. They are cold hardy and more sun, heat, and drought tolerant than other hydrangeas. Quick Fire Fab grows best in a sunny to partly sunny location. Morning sun with afternoon shade typically works well, especially in the South. The shrub can be pruned after going dormant in fall, but if left until early spring, the hollow stems will provide bees a nesting habitat. Fertilize in early spring as soon as the ground begins to thaw and continue monthly through July if desired.
